History
The Indian Ocean Hotel, was opened on 14 April 1972 by his worship, the Mayor of Stirling, NC Hopkins JP and was orginally named the White Sands Motor Hotel. Later its name was changed to The Sands Motor Hotel. Originally owned by a locally formed company, it was purchased by the current owners, the Grove family, in may 1985. Since then, family and staff have changed the hotel from having a company-owned atmosphere into the caring, warm and homely abode it is today. Know as "The Indi", the hotel boasts being the first licensed beach-side motel of its kind in the area. When the hotel was built, Scarborough was little more than an outer suburb, with small residential developments and a number of beach-side holiday homes. It was envisaged that Scarborough would eventually become the 'Surfers Paradise of the West'. Today, more than 20 years later, this vision has become a reality with the building of the major developments and the instigation of the 'Sunset Coast Association' promotion. |
